Dutch artist Jan Mankes (1889-1920) was only thirty years old when he died, but he left behind a body of subtle, beautifully restrained work. His portraits and animal studies have an undeniable charm, but I'm especially taken by these lonesome landscapes.

These landscapes fit beautifully with The Only Lament.
