László Mednyánszky (1852-1919) divided his time between painting scenes of nature and scenes of the street. His subjects were often soldiers, vagrants, and petty thieves, some of whom are featured above. A broadly brushed, loosely painted style affiliated him with the Impressionist movement, and gave his landscapes a dreamy yet urgent quality. I will be posting some of those soon.

Really great. Disturbing, profound, figurative/expressionist (?). I'm reading "The Master and Margarita" & these could be illustrations.

They seem relatively unusual for the time when they were painted, which makes me like them even more.
